Recently Olivier, Michee, Chadia, Didier and Marie had the opportunity to participate in their first post secondary school visit in the Fox Valley. The group traveled to St. Norbert College in West Depere to learn firsthand what an American college can offer its students. After a short overview presentation, an admission officer answered the students’ questions and then the group toured the campus.
The Burundian students are very much like American students as they contemplate and worry about “life after high school.” Working hard at their high school classes, preparing for and taking ACT tests and gathering information about career choices keeps the Burundian students very engaged in preparing for their future.
It appears that all the Burundian students, who are presently studying at Lourdes Academy and Xavier High School, would very much like to continue their education in the United States. American colleges have so much more to offer students than do the few existing colleges in Burundi. Because of their dire financial situation, it will be difficult for the majority of our students to attend a U.S. post secondary school; however, this does not discourage our students from pursing their dream. Perhaps through the generosity and kindness of American sponsors, a student’s dream may come true!
The students continue to work hard, set goals and follow their dreams as they make plans for their future – a future that may one day impact the impoverished children of Burundi and bring hope to the “hungriest country in the world (US Today 2014).”
